Now, before anyone climbs my frame, I'll admit that I did suggest that a visitors center/museum should be built on the slope up from the restrooms. My rationale here is that there are many examples in NPS controlled sites where such a thing has been done. Yeah, I'll admit that these buildings do violate the integrity of the site, but in my mind the end justifies the means. Historic interpretation does play an important part in many of many of the NPS facilities. But if tastefully done, with full consideration of the historic value of the site, then it can be justified.
Another alternative, mentioned earlier with respect to Roger's hotel, was purchase/conversion of a business on Terrace Avenue. Any vacant lots or businesses for sale on the RR side of Terrace in the area of the new restrooms? I'm sure the Friends don't want to spend contributions to purchase a commercial structure, but on the other hand, if one is available and would fit the needs as a visitor center/museum without construction of a new structure why not? It would not be in the rail yard per se, but would be close enough for walking. Such a location would certainly put an end to the discussion of placement. Of course, as was done with the location of the new CRF, if such an offer of sale was presented to the Friends, IMO they should grab it.
