As has been said before you can have it Good-Fast-Cheap. Pick two. Best to do "Good" and let the other two sort themselves out according to your resources.
You are right on the money Linn. A well thought out operation and maintenance program is essential. Otherwise you end up like ATSF 3751 in San Bernardino - all dressed up and nowhere to go. Or worse like the torn down engines without money to put them back together.
I think the Durango crew is going about it the right way. They have had a well thought out plan for the reconstruction and have maintained excellent relationships with the railroads they plan to run over along with an apparent plan for ongoing maintenance. I just hope they are able to have the engine in a permanant facility where they can properly maintain her.
