315 had some mild damage to the boiler around the dome, due to municipal 'watering' of the display. Under Form 4 Part 230 rules this was repaired with some pad welding. The frame is slghtly bowed up on the engineer's side ,but this was compensated by tramming the drivers. There are tales of a cracked cylinder block, but we found no sign of this.
The 318 has serious problems. It has heavy cavitation of the number 1 course right around the front flue sheet. That course would have to be replaced. The CRRM has talked about replacing the second course as well, but it looked o.k. to me. The firebox is new, never used. The frame hit something real hard, dead-on, sometime in its working life. It has a slight zig-zag between the pedestal jaws, and this had been compensated with good tramming. Though it is going back together for cosmetic display, some at the CRRM say it will be restored to operation someday.
