Well now, this is turning into a fine pot of stew!
Years ago, in my first "Preservation Perspective" for the Friends "Dispatch" I was careful to provide the accepted definitions for a number of terms that are considered synonyms in common use. These include:
-preservation
-restoration
-recreation
-rehabilitation
and one or two others that don't come to mind. Sadly, the files on my computer are so old they are in WordPerfect, so it is up to another poster with better files to find the issue and share with us the correct technical defiination of each of the above terms.
While the NPS has the naturalists on one end and the preservationist on the other, in the museum world it is the archiveists and the interpreters. The former want to store everything in a temperate, dark room, while the latter want to share the stuff with--GASP--the public!
I am enjoying all your input immensely. Keep it up!
