A friend and I were lucky enough to have a cab ride in 1077, from the Diamond up to the reload and back. 17 empty flats was tonnage on the 3 1/2% grade, and we were down to about 3mph, flat out. I was 16, and the year was 1967.
2 years later, I spent a couple days in Chemainus, riding and photographing #4, a 2-8-2 tank engine, that switched the mill.
This was certainly the last revenue steam I saw in operation, what a wonderful memory!
To tie this in with narrow gauge, both trips also included long visits at the forest museum at Cowichan. Both 0-4-0's ran while I was there, and once the tiny Shay was operating too.
