Several years ago the former UP branchline between LaGrande and Joseph, Ore. then owned by INAP (now Wallowa Union Rail Authority) had some limited direct log loading in the Wallowa River Canyon. The line was all but shut down as far as regular freight traffic and an owner of timber land in the canyon that is not accessable by road, but ajacent to the rr arranged for cars to be spotted and had a log loader assembled onto a flat car. As I recall they had a Cat on that side of the canyon that skidded the logs down to the loading points. They loaded logs at different points for some months. I have no idea how many actual loads went out, though it must have been a good number.
