The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR Commission should not establish narrow gauge track standards for the FRA or nation’s narrow gauge railroads.
Presently there are no FRA track standards for any narrow gauge railroad and therefore any FRA inspector is “out of jurisdiction” if he measures any gauge or count any ties. The C&TS does not have the experienced career people who can make a fair list of standards, which will not make narrow gauge railroad far more expensive to maintain than any standard gauge line. It took decades and hundred of railroads impute to develop the Standard Gauge specification and years of public hearing and corrections.
Will narrow gauge track require tie plates? I am sure the C&TS folks who are to draw up these specifications do not know what is the allowed plate cut depth into a tie to reach the limits of a failed tie. It took years of review to decide what is acceptable for safety and that has never been done on the C&TS. Maybe the White Pass & Yukon would have more qualified people to say how they want the track that they operate over. But will the East Broad Top want to comply with that kind of track, and have to put tie plates on every tie? How about all the other ng tourist lines that are under FRA interest?
There is no safety need for any Federal intrusion into any narrow gauge railroad in this ENTIRE NATION! The TRAINS Organization should get this stopped on the C&TS Commission and get the FRA to reconsider the request as the FRA only have authority to operate “in need of safety” and there is no deaths or injuries to justify such a government expansion of control.
