Otto Perry – Master RR Photographer by Charles Albi and William C. Jones has a biography of Otto by friend and fellow railfan & photographer Richard Kindig. He relates how during WWII Otto had the misfortune of being arrested in Oklahoma by the local sheriff for being a Nazi spy, besides who else would be crazy enough to photograph trains? Dick also relates a story of a trip that Otto and E. J. Haley took together in 1946. Otto picks up Haley about 12:30AM on Sunday morning (after adjusting the brakes on his trusty ’35 Ford). They take off and drive for a couple of hours and then catch a couple of hours sleep in the car before exploring the South Park’s grade over Boreas Pass when daylight broke! By the time the ’35 Ford was retired it had rolled up over 300,000 miles in train chasing. Yes, we are fortunate that there were “crazies” like Otto Perry who were passionate about recording the passing of a unique and memorable era of railroading for us all to enjoy.
