278 was the first Rio Grande narrow gauge locomotive I ever encountered. In 1959 I successfully pleaded with my parents that we just had to detour via Montrose and Silverton on our return trip from Rocky Mountain National Park on the way home to Alamogordo, New Mexico. Admiring 278 too long almost cost me my first trip from Durango to Silverton. Luckily the day's departure behind 476 was delayed by switching 3 gondolas into the southbound train, long enough for me to scramble aboard. My dad took a picture of me in the cab of 278 before heading to Silverton - no claims that this is a well framed photo of 278, but the engine surely was looking great then.
