Hi Jerry, your post paraphrased said 278 wasn’t in good condition in 1953. I assume that’s when she was placed there. My comment on seeing her in 1963 was based on her external condition - would have no idea of mechanical condition. Agree with your comment that a small engine house display in Cimarron would have been preferable from the equipment preservation point of view, and might even be cheaper in the long run with continual maintenance of an outdoor exhibit.
Same could be said of course for any outdoor exhibits, with C&S 71 & 60 being just two of many many examples. And yet I think of 315 in Durango, 168 in colorado Springs and 20 at the CRRM. Those last two were more than 50 years outdoors, and what wonderful transformations have been made.
