You just put your finger on one of the things I have always resisted: Using the proprietary format of any software house to organize my photos. My master storage is in a simple directory tree structure, by year and month. It's perfectly portable across platforms and operating systems at no cost.
Once I get to processing, then I'll consider that 'round' of processing being part of the proprietary workflow of whomever's software I'm using. But I always have that master file sitting there untouched and accessible.
Adobe did the world a favor by inventing the .pdf format and giving it away for everyone's use. I have hopes the .dng format has similar promise, but I also tend to doubt that photo software will stop supporting the RAW format for various cameras.
