Yesterday afternoon I called and made a reservation at The Hotel & Shops.
Based on what I have read in this thread and several others (and after having consulted a map) it looks to be a good fit for me. I'm coming to Chama later in the season for the fireman's school and staying across the street from the yard so I can walk there would be ideal. I'm traveling from Cincinnati, OH to ride and work with trains, not to drive a car. I like the historic nature of the hotel, and I'm thankful I don't have to pay for amenities I don't intend to use. I don't care about how many channels there are on the TV, I don't need a pool, and after shoveling coal in a locomotive, a gym is the last thing on my priority list. I care about there being a clean and comfortable bed, a good shower (because coal is dirty), and staff/owners that take pride in what they do.
I am hopeful for a good experience at my hotel, at the C&TS, and on my first vacation in many years..
Keep the stories coming. The train is great, but it's the people and the places, as well as the experiences, that make the memories.
