The D & S Rail camp box car is alive and well on the D & S. It was taken out of service last summer due to the San Juan Forest being closed to all public entry. The railroad continued to run for a while longer, as it owns it's own right of way.
This summer presents a whole new set of conditions. If it is still determined that there is a risk of forest fires, the car will probably not be allowed to run. It is usually chartered from Monday to Friday on a given week. As there is only one location that is practical to spot if for that many days on the line, there is only the one car available. I'm sure if there were other locations, they would convert more. It 's a great revenue maker for the D & S.
