OK, I have watched and read and now I guess I will chip in my 1 and one half cents....
The first time I ever saw the K-28's, they had the diamonds on them and I did not know the difference. It wasn't until I became enlightened later on that I knew they were not built that way.
Personally, I think it is a waste of time to put them on....If you really look at it, the public won't care one bit if the smokestack is straight or if it's a diamond. The public wants to SEE the smoke, SMELL the smoke and hear the CHUG, CHUG of the engine as it goes down the track. Only to us 'purists' does it really make a difference.
I mean look at the Big Boys and the Challengers, they don't hardly have a stack to speak of at all and look at the crowds they draw.....(Sorry SG referrance..)
Diamond, Onion, Rushton, Straight....whatever....it all comes down to what my daughter and son said when they rode the C&TS for the first time.....CHUGGA, CHUGGA, CHOO-CHOO!
That my friends, is what sells the tickets.
Just MHO.
