When discussing the diamond stacks on the 470's we have to remember that these were first applied when the locomotives were barely 30 years old.
I suspect that the D&RGW people of the 50's probably thought "why would someone pay to ride behind something that they see every day?"
So, the decision was made to try to backdate the locomotives to appear "old" to people in the 1950's.
My folks are of the same vintage as the 470's and 480's. In the 1950's Dad was fresh out of the Army and just getting started paying for the first house. I bet to him 1923 did not seem all that ancient.
I'm not saying that diamonds on the 470's were right or wrong (don't like them myself), but just suggesting that we need to look at it, not through our eyes in 2003, but through the eyes of someone in the 1950's.
