Fine Tuning......1949

February 26, 2003 06:51AM
Thanks, John, and with apologies to Charlie:
When in doubt, research!
According to Andy Payne in his book "Grande Gold", the first appearance of the new Silver & Gold paint scheme was in June, 1949 when engine #268 and a small train which included Combine #212, Business Car B-3 (which was lettered "General Palmer"), and 4 open obsevation cars were all gussied up at Burnham and shipped to the Chicago Railroad Fair.
The following year, 1950, the D&RGW received delivery of new Pullman-Standard coaches in Silver & Gold. Engine #473 was painted in the new Bumblebee scheme. Coach #280 was also painted Silver & Gold in 1950.
In 1951, the movie "Denver & Rio Grande" was filmed, and new Boxcab Diesels were delivered in Silver & Gold.
The D&RGW introduced the new scheme with narrow gauge equipment, but in Chicago. The rest, as they say, is history.
