To recap,
It doesn't matter what anyone today or then thinks, but I admired the way the railroad promoted the line as "The Return To Yesterday".
Secondly, please do not make the idiotic mistake of imagining that the "Grande Gold" coaches and the fake stacks were not part of the D&RGW Narrow Gauge history. The fact is, as was pointed out here last week, D&RGW narrow gauge operations did not make any money at all except perhaps one year since World War 1 until the end of the mainline operation in 1968. In the years between 1968 and 1981 when the Silverton Branchline was sold, Narrow Gauge revenue the D&RGW operated at a profit at last, and this was largely due to the promotion of the line by the D&RGW. It was not railfans who made the difference, it was years and years of tourists who rode the "Return To Yesterday" that made the difference. And the Diamond stacks were a big part of the "trademark" look. They were not an accident.
And, as it turned out, they were extremely effective cinder catchers as well.
I will be at Railfest.
See you there!
