K-28's and the Public Perception

I am well aware there have been many a debate on the K-28 diamond stacks. Now, if Im not mistaken, the D&RGW put the stacks on to help promote Rio Grandeland, in the idea that the riding public was out to have a real western adventure and the diamond stacks would help in the show. Now my question is, why is it that the public seems to have the idea that trains need to have funny looking diamond stacks? Does it make the train cute? Its pretty obvious that the stacks are out of place, so, when you saw them for the first time, what were your thoughts?
