On the other board, this topic got some attention so I thought I would mention it here.
According to sources, (Dave Boyer) the Friends will be making a pitch to the RR Commission for permission to construct a two-story visitor center on RR property in the Chama north yard...at today's meeting.
Frankly, I think a visitor center would be great...but in the north yard, and with whos permission and authority? My understanding is that the Chama yard complex is both a NM and Fed. historic site...and protected by statute.
Certainly, there must be a spot on Terrace Avenue, suitable for this endeavour.
I am not clear if the RR Commission even has the authority to give permission.
Seems to me that a new building, built on a historic site, violates the historic integrity of the site itself.
A real concern I believe, is the audacity of the Friends, to act as agent to swap a boxcar (taxpayer owned) the the tribe at Dulce for a couple of broken down stock cars...or build on a historic site. Perhaps it is a good deal...perhaps not. I just don't know.
What worries me is that a private organization (Friends) are acting as though they were the official agent of State governments and negotiating without any obvious authority to do so. Seems like it's a little 'ballsy' from my perspective.
Just more questions than answers for me. Fire away while I jump into my Nomex flight suit.
