OM is on the Friends long-range project radar screen. The "Flanger/Spreader Gang" (Terry and Sherri Rider, Gail Gish, Jeff Smith, and several 'part-timers' including myself) is considering a complete restoration/rebuild from the rail head up. Several things need to happen first, however.
First, the crew needs to finish the restoration of the Jordan Spreader. What started out as a cosmetic restoration for display purposes has devolved into a much more extensive rebuild due to the issues revealed once the deck and house were removed. Complete restoration to operating condition became the goal when the advantages of using the Jordan for ditching were considered.
Second, the OM project will be a multi-year project that requires some means of protecting the machine year round once the wood shell has been removed. A restoration building would be the optimum way to do that. That would mean a restoration building would need to be built preferably somewhere in Chama. This too is on the long-range 'wish list', just need money. Lots of it. Terry Rider has done some preliminary documentation on OM with an eye on restoring it sometime in the future.
