These are C&S cars (at least originally). You can clearly see the steel underframe of the first box car. It is the date and actual owners of the cars that is in question. I'm not an RGS expert so I don't know if the RGS sold some of there cars to the Chicago Feight Car Parts Co. (located in Salida, iirc) in 1940. But. The C&S did. If this is 1940 then these cars probably had nothing at all to do with the RGS and, in fact are probably on there way to some place like Alaska. I'm pulling all of this from memory so my details may be off a little (like dates?). If this is 1938 then indeed these cars are going to the RGS. And RGS did not buy them. Victor Miller came to own them thru a law suit. He charged the C&S with breech of contract after both the RR and the ICC denied his proposal for operating the South Park in 1933. No money was exchanged and I have a copy of a draft of the settlement.
Con. I would very much like to get a copy of this photo and any others if you don't mind sharing. High resolution scans are fine and I would certainly be willing to share anything with you I may have. I hope I am not being presumptuous.
Great shot!!
Thanks
