I've made the suggestion several times that the C&TS should pursue the acquisition of trackage rights to and within the UP Antonito yard and a lease with the town to use the Antonito depot. The possible benefits:
1. Passengers, if they choose, could board at the "town" station. That might generate some foot traffic for the Antonito merchants, especially if charter buses were directed to drop their passengers there.
2. The UP probably owns enough yard space for the C&TS to add some car storage tracks, sorely needed in Antonito. There would be space to move some of the equipment out of the congested Chama yard. Heck, even the proposed "sacred cow" car repair facility might be located in Antonito.
3. A standard-gauge/narrow gauge interchange area could be constructed so that the C&TS could receive track materials, etc. via the UP.
Now, such a project might not be easy. There might be other landowners from which property might have to be secured to facilitate a connection. The UP would certainly have to be "romanced" into making a donation/lease. There might be a few "aginners" in Antonito to be dealt with. Still, it seems like an idea worth pursuing.
