"Do away with this stupid law if you want to make a few extra needed dollars to help keep this fragile piece of Railroad in existance."
Sorry Greg, but being a resident of Colorado, I take great issue with that statement. Rather than add passegengers at the Chama end at the expense of Antonito, they should be improving the Antonito end to attract more tourists there. It has been promised for thirty years! The grocery stores, motels, shops, and even liquor stores and bars in Antonito have gotten the short end of the stick for too long. And Antonito is one hell of a lot cleaner and more family oriented than Chama.
What also has been hashed and rehashed for thirty years is the scheduling of trains. Why do we keep coming back to this discussion? About the only thing I see new with your idea is the use of freight equipment. But won't that take away from the freight specials that were always something rarer and different? Who is going to look after that equipment on the pass? Do you really think that enough people would want to ride a freight train for lots more money that often?
Why don't we (Rick Steele, I mean you too) start figuring out how to cary more people on the EXISTING single train out of Antonito? Idea No. One: Pay off the UP and the town of Antonito for the real depot in town and move the terminal there. And get the trackage rights too.
