I never conduccted a through inspection of either the 494 or 495. I was told by Earl when I first came to the C&TS that they were "junkers" and I was busy enough that I never really looked them over. Neither one should be sectioned because the only difference between a junker and a fine functional locomotive is cubic dollars. However if it has been sectioned then it is only a short step to Toyota door panels and fence wire.
I did not know that the 497 got the 492 lead truck after the derailment in 2000. I do know that if the lateral is wrong in the lead truck or the centering devices on the number one drivers are jammed or worn out the engine wont track worth a damn!
