Cut away is good idea. Just make sure it is a steam locomotive not historic or part of the Colorado or New Mexico narrow gauge history. Somewhere there must be a 0-4-0 or 0-6-0 that is not repairable somewhere that could be had for scrap price and cut open in such manner.
The ex-GTW, ex-Sterling Steel and Wire 0-8-0s that the Illinois Railway Museum had in storage would be a good example. They are too tired or too stripped to be rebuilt. Not sure if any are still left. The last of these may have been scrapped in trade for another locomotive for replacement scrap weight. They may still have one or two left. Several of these locos have ended up as displays at depots or historical exhibits that needed a non-operational steam locomotive for display.
