CJ, you bring up a great point in suggesting that most passengers perceive a locomotive boiler to be nothing more than a supersized tea kettle. During recent years, the neat thing about the ongoing work and open nature of the Chama rail yard, is that anyone interested could view engines, and their "innards" displayed in various states of repair.
Joe tourist probably doesn't need to know the difference between flues and superheater tubes, but is important that the complexity of a steam locomotive be displayed. This is essential in conveying proper interpretation of the historical technology. Equally important, it explains to Joe why the scope of the restoration and maintanance tasks requires use of his tax money.
Carlos' photos are a good first step. Ultimately, it should be a goal to have a "park engine" with boiler cutaway, and essential
running gear components adequately described with appropriate signage.
Hopefully, there will always be projects, if not dreams!
