I wouldn't trust what the many (myself included) arm-chair master mechanics say. But at any rate, whichever loco gets fixed between the '37's, it will be after 489 at minimum, and that is still be a big challenge in and of itself, given the money crunch that the RR is currently faced with.
Now for my opinion, Sure they'll fix 497. It's had a lot of running gear work, so it's probably in good shape in regards to that. Remember that it had close to a full rebuild before it's last season, which was shortened due the fire danger. I beleive that many of the problems it had out on the road were due to the miserable condition of the track and the roadbed, which is being worked on also, hopefully.
