Thanks again Carlos and Rog for the shop update. I always learn something. This week's edition triggered a couple of questions on insulation.
What kind of material (and brand name(s)) do you use in the block insulation, as well as the "mud"?
Do you remove the supporting wires after the cement is set, or do you let nature take its course.
In any case, the description of how the insulation goes on was most informative.
Here's another idea along the lines of a public bulletin board. How many C&TS riders (or yard visitors) have the foggiest idea what goes on inside a boiler? I'll betcha most just think it is a big teakettle. A picture board may really help in that respect. This sounds like something the Friends could handle if you, Carlos, would select and furnish them. Obviously, all of your vast collection can't be displayed. Personally, I would like to see you do the selection. You know what is important and what is not.
From time to time over the last couple of years, even a few denizens of this board have whined and complained about how long these rebuilds are taking. Carlos, you have done a superb job in illustrating just how complex and involved a steamer really is. For that alone you deserve a medal. If there was a "scrapbook" or "bulletin board display" - mebbe both, the unwashed and doubters could get educated. And if someone in the future complains about the time and cost factor it will be very easy to swat them up side their head with the scrapbook.
