I'll drink to that, Glenn -     smileys with beer

Like I said earlier, and giving ourselves the benefit of the doubt, apparently great minds do think more-or-less alike:  it's how well the end result satisfies the intended purpose that counts.  With that in mind, here's one last look at the extremes, re-posted to allow side-by-side (or above and below) comparisons.

The original, slightly trimmed to 5120×3072 pixels, color & lighting adjusted, compressed at jpg quality 46 to fit the NGDF at 2.399 MB:

The same file as above, resized to 1024×683 pixels, 'unsharp masked' at 60%, r=1.5, t=2, compressed at jpg quality 50 to 0.253 MB:
700926-30-100+uns.jpg

. . . and screen captures from the above files as displayed by the NGDF, enlarged by a factor of five for comparison:

As to which of the above is better, all I can say at this point is that "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder."     eye popping smiley

p.s. (at 8:05 pm)  To finish things off, here's one final quick ex-Sperry-ment — the full-size file after applying the 'unsharp mask' at 60%, r=7, t=2 and saving at jpg quality 35 to meet the NGDF upload size limit of 2.44 MB (2.394 MB here):
700926-30-500+uns-7.jpg

. . . and a screen-capture of the logo as displayed immediately above by the NGDF, enlarged by a factor of five for comparison to the two posted previously.
700926-30-logo-500+uns-7.jpg

So it's all a matter of preference and compromise — whatever was gained in one place by sharpening was lost elsewhere to more .jpg compression being needed (46 > 35) to meet the NGDF file size limit (as well as bandwidth challenges for those of us not having high-speed internet connections).
