That "brief flicker" you experience with decent internet can be a 5-10sec interregnum for us with slow internet. I don't see NGDF as a server doing any shrinkage to any dimension; that's happening in the browser according to the tag dimensions after the image is downloaded...
There is a case for full-size in this forum, though. I've seen recent exchanges where folk were trying to determine some aspect of detail, like recognition of a face, or divining the shape of a part. 800x600 won't help that endeavor...
