Re: Steam locomotives and Radial engines

A year or three ago I heard the familiar sound of radial engines. I immediately recognized it as the sound of R4360 engines. These were the largest radials ever made and were used on the C124's, KC97's, and B50's and the like, and packed 3500 hp on takeoff. 28 cylinders with a total displacement of 4360 cu. in. -- hence the designation.
I couldn't tell from the long distance whether the plane was a C124, or a KC97, but who cares. It sure brought back memories as I have over 1200 hours in KC97's. One tough airplane that performed well beyond Boeing's design specifications.
Also superseded rather quickly by the KC135, it none the less was a brute in its day. We could offload 45,000 lbs. of jet fuel in about 11 minutes. Don't try that at your local gas station.
