Steam locomotives and Radial engines

There is always one sound that will make a pilot look up .....that is the roar made by a radial engine. If there was ever anything in aviation that rivaled the enchantment of a steam locomotive it is an airplane powered by a radial engine.
About 12 years ago the Air Force Association was invited to an airpower demonstration at the Indian Springs auxiliary base of Nellis AFB. The USAF put on quite a show of devastating firepower with A 10s and other sophisticated jets and missles. However, when the Confederate Air Force came overhead in a huge formation with all those radials growling and shaking the earth, the entire crowd (that had filled over 100 busses) came to their feet with thundering applause and cheers. It was an experience that has engraved itself forever in my soul.
