My Dad was with Pan American for just about 40 years. When I was in 4th grade, he took me out of school one day & I rode with him in a DC-4 from SFO to LAX. At one point, the Captain left his seat & went back in the aircraft (no passengers, just cargo). My Dad had me sit down in the left-hand seat & then told me to go ahead & fly the damn thing. I was interested in aviation & had a few hours of dual, but this machine was too intimidating for me! I finally got over my fear & had about 20 minutes time at the controls. Even made a few aeleron turns as my feet couldn't reach the rudder pedals. When we got close to LAX approach, Dad told me to leave the seat, but I remembering asking him to let me land it. You can guess how far that request got. I still think I remember the tail number... it was Clipper N88884.
