I've stayed at the NG Inn on a number of occasions - alone, with my wife and with my son. It is, as others have said, a bit run down with minimal (OK, no) amenities, but they do seem to keep it clean so there's that. It's a bed for the night and that's it. Two years ago my wife and I had reservations at the Steam Train Hotel but ended up canceling them. A co-worker (who's tastes resemble ours and who's opinions we trust) had just returned from there with some rather disturbing stories from his one night stay. We like "funk" and actually seek out unique mom'n'pop kinds of places, but having heard what we heard we bailed. Perhaps, as John states, there's new management and things are better, as we really hoped the place would work as our new default Antonito choice.
For the last few years, if I'm doing things on the RR based out of Antonito I've taken to staying in Alamoso. Yes, it's a little bit of a drive but not really too bad - the main thing is that the lodging options are better. Mostly generic chains, but better than what's available in Antonito, I'm sorry to say. I used to not care much for Alamosa, but over the years the place has really grown on me.
