Great Photos, Gavin -
You brought back a lot of good memories! Thanks for sharing!!
Back in 1969 I was still teaching high school, and I spent that whole summer traveling around Europe. Forty-five years ago this week I was playing in a tennis tournament in Wengen, and they put up some of the better-known players in the big hotel in your second picture on 'Pics 3' (above) and most of us nobodies in a smaller hotel nearby; we all got our meals in the dining room of the big one.
One of the nicest things about Wengen - indeed, that whole area - is that internal combustion engines of any kind are absolutely
verboten, so it's very quiet and peaceful. The only way to get there is either by electric train or a long, very steep hike
; even the "golf carts" that transport people and luggage between the railway station and the hotels are electric.
Forty-five years ago today there was an incredible headline on Wengen's local newspaper -
"MENNER IM MOND" - and people celebrated Mankind's achievement long into the night. Thankfully, things went better up there than the following illustration suggests

p.s. Buzz Aldrin's daughter Janice was part of the gang of semi-senior citizens that I hung around with a few years ago.
I gave a framed copy of the above to her son Geoffrey as a present for his eighth or ninth birthday
. . .
