I have long held the opinion that long-term car storage should be in Antonito. Why? First, the climate there, while no means benign, is much drier, winter and summer, than Chama. For outside storage, this would lessen deterioration. I suspect sun damage in Antonito, as observed on the passenger coaches, would be as severe in Chama if the yard there were oriented east-west. Having such facilities in Antonito rather than Chama would keep the yard in Chama relatively "authentic," as well (i.e., no "new" buildings).
Now, the naysayers will say that there is no space in Antonito. True, as things stand now. Here's where my wild idea comes in. How about if the Friends, Commission, and RGRPC tried to negotiate for the UP's sizeable Antonito yard area through a joint use agreement, lease, or donation. Would the UP be interested in this? Who knows? But it wouldn't hurt to pursue it. They might be willing to "give up" the original Antonito depot, too, so as not to worry about historical preservation issues with it.
Just an idea, but why not? Crazier things have been done! Besides, wouldn't some more 3-rail track be pretty neat?
