Anything over 35 mph is pretty much fabrication, exept perhaps on the
"racetrack" between Alamosa and Antonito...then maybe 40 mph tops.
Scheduled time for the San Juan passenger train between Chama and Durango was five hours and the distance was 111 miles. That is an
average speed of 22 mph.
Making that trip in five hours westbound was running a k28 flat out whenever possible with safety...
This I can tell you from personal experience, having made the run in five hours one night when firing the 476 for Bill Holt (who just loved to run fast...). He told me we would make "San Juan Time". We did.
We were moving some empty passenger equipment back to Durango to get it there in time for the second Silverton run.
