When I was at the C&T October Engineer/Fireman class we were told that trains were to be run at 8-15mph from Chama to just after Lava. There are limits on speeds through turnouts (8mph), bridges (8-10mph). From Lava to Antonito the track was good for 25mph, although the timetable states max speed on this stretch is to be 20mph. We did open up the K-36 on that stretch. Since there are no speedometers on the locos speed is measured by time between mileposts. Per the employee timetable, May 23, 2009, 20mph is 3:00 minutes per mile. By the time one becomes a road engineer on the C&T they can tell the speed by rate of chuffing from the stack.
