this has come up several times before, check the archives.

In brief, there are several tales of 60MPH+ speed but they aren't very credible. by the 30's maximum timetable speed limits were 40-45 mph, with the K36/37 engines being restricted to 35MPH. Passenger trains were carded at average speeds of 18-20 MPH, with the fastest being train 317 (Salida-Alamosa) at 21.25 MPH. (about 23 MPH Villa Grove-Alamosa) which would tend to imply Max speeds of 25-30 MPH.
