The 9600 gons use the same truck as the 6500 flats. That is the reason the 2 cars are still here at all. Originally the C&TS had 4 9600 gons. In the early 1980's 2 cars were traded to the D&S for a tie tamper. D&S wanted all 4 but settled for 2. We picked the cars with the best wheels and hid them at Toltec for the winter so the D&S guys didn't have a choice in which cars they got. The cars we kept eventually got robbed of good wheels and sat on badly shelled and flat wheels. I recall running one on a charter freight. The car punded and bounced to hard that it lost some of it's brake rigging.
One of them got new wheels and got fixed up for use as the gon on the Chama side when it became obvious that having a wood gon against the engine with a heavy steel framed train behind it was literally tearing the open gons apart. I'm not sure exactly when this happened, am thinking it was at the very end of Kyle's time (1997) or the first year Gbart was around (1998).
