The 493 in Silverton is in the process of being repainted. There is fencing around the engine right now and work has started. Except for the parts appropriated from the 493 for use on other engines, this one in in good condition as I understand it and would be a likely candidate for an overhaul. It was used heavily in the last 2 full years of D&RGW operations and was stored serviceable. The few years in Silverton have not been kind to it, but the subject of neglect of historic D&S equipment at Silverton, Tacoma and Durango was discussed at the May meeting with Al Harper and the Advisory Committee and Al said that as time and funds permitted, he would reinvest in this equipment. His focus right now is on the State of Texas railroad, but some things, like repainting the 493 are underway. There is a strong feeling among the staff of the D&S that this equipment needs attention, and I think we will be gradually seeing some positive things happen.
