The incomplete restoration of Santa Fe Northern 2912 is an example of not having all the ducks lined up. The group that was going to restore it to operating condition, the Pueblo Locomotive and Rail Historical Society, went out of business. That group stripped the locomotive and had some of the appliances rebuilt. Then things went south for this group in a hurry. The group suffered from a lack of sweat equity and money.
The current trustee of the locomotive, the Pueblo Railway Foubdation, is researching grants to restore the locomotive cosmetically. I can speak for this as I am the public relations person for the group after coming over from the PLRHS in 2004. However,it is a competitive market as far as grants are concerned so I know of nothing on the horizon going toward the restoration of this engine.
We frankly are embarrassed by its condition but it will be greenbacks and not red faces that will bring it back.
