Coke Said:
"C&S #74 had problems beyond repair and will return to display."
John, the correct phrase is "Beyond economic repair". The CHS didn't want to sink the money required into the locomotive for repair. The frame and boiler, from what I understand, are shot and the poor old thing needs new or extensively rebuilt ones. The CHS, like so many other groups, is looking for a hulk that can be repaired within their set budget.
All of that "Historical Fabric" crap aside, The CHS didn't realize just how worn ouT the 30/74 is after its foray on the RGS.
The Smithsonian has no qualms about fabricating new parts for aircraft at their restoration facilities. Car restorers have no qualms about using Reproduction parts, So what is so darn special about a boiler on wheels? Nothing. All it takes is bucks. Cubic bucks in the 74's case and more than the CHS wants to spend. Same goes for the 42 in Durango in regards to the D&Sng.
