As I said before, I have very little knowledge of the history and facts of railroad unions, or any unions at all. As a young man, there were times when certain doors were closed because I didn't have and couldn't get- a union card.
As a computer professional most of my career, I do know that most computer people have routinely resisted unionization. I would find 'seniority' rules to be onerous beyond bearing. I never could see why x number of years on the job should entitle anybody to anything, except x years of vesting in retirement. Performance, ability and attitude are what get you ahead in the non-union world.
Now, I agree that in the case of the CTSRR, some major relief is needed in the area of pay and benefits. But let's face it. The CTSRR is a seasonal tourist operation, and more a tourist enterprise than a railroad. It is hanging on for dear life, just to keep 4 engines running and a train running every day.
Having spent some years working in various tourist enterprises, I know that the pay and benefits always suck, and you work at it because you want to. If you want to make a decent living with benefits, you go somewhere else.
It is often said that The CTSRR and others may well lose some valuable employees if wages and benefits don't improve. The fact is that new employees show up regularly, and I don't see anybody quitting. Many older ones may bitch but they love the work too much to quit.
