That's a good question, Herb.
I dunno the answer, but it's worth looking into.
I have mulled over the idea of a private campaign to raise money for the employee benefits, but there are too many legal entanglements. Personally I wouldn't know where/how to start.
But I'm sure it could be done.
The railroad is holding its own, and some folks are certainly doing some things right. Between them, Kim Flowers and John Craft have done a remarkable job in the advertising/PR end of the business. As I stood on the platform yesterday afternoon, Kim Flowers came up and told me that 541 passegers rode yesterday. I can't quite describe it, but I felt like she was about to bust with joy, tired as she is. Everyone involved sems to be working especially hard to make it happen. The shop crew has a new, simple motto: "Can Do!".
Let us not forget however, that as things stand now, the railroad is still highly dependent upon the generosity of strangers: State legislators, governors and foundations. The ridership just barely covers the operating costs. Engines 484 and 488 are languishing in the shop because the money from the states is tied up by Gov. Johnson's veto. There is no money for parts.
It is entirely possible that another big private money-raising campaign will be needed to keep the shop going this winter.
