The Pueblo Chieftain has given the C&TS more coverage than any other Colorado paper, but as Craft observed, they never get even the basic facts straight. I am guessing that reporters see the smoke and think there is a fire, and why not? The r.r. has had a very hard 10 years, is perceived as a money pit for the two states, and looks like a great setting for corruption. Most of us here realize that corruption is not the real problem, but a depleted infrastructure is. The reportage does not seem to be based on any investigative work, just news releases and other second-hand sources and plain hearsay. This is the way of small-town papers, even the best of 'em.
Some time ago on the forum we discussed the changing tourist patterns out West. It is sad, but the railroad has had only a limited impact on the two towns' economies over the years, with Antonito getting the smaller portion of the tourist dollar. The good news is the railroad still has the same authentic look it has always had, and if C&TS survives, it will someday be a powerful selling point. I see potential in the future of SLRG-C&TS packages as well.
