ANTONITO - The two towns at each end of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad line are in the middle of a tourist season that powers both economies during lean times.
Many of those tourists come to ride the 64-mile scenic railroad, which is owned by the states of Colorado and New Mexico, and many leave some of their money at local hotels and shops.
But while some hotel owners say the train brings them significant business, others aren't so sure, and there hasn't been a study of just how much the railroad benefits the local economies.
At the same time, the railroad is fighting rising maintenance costs, a shortage of maintenance money from the two states and ridership numbers that still are far below the levels of 10 years ago.
Pretty But Not Profitable
