I think there is a major distinction which needs to be made here. First of all, minor derailments are sort of a fact of life, despite all best efforts some times.
But here, the deficiencies in the Loop incident sort of jump out at you. They appear to be avoidable. Although the details are sketchy on the C&TS derailment, they would be receiving the same flak if the deficiencies were equally obvious.
I'm not going to go into any more details, nor blame Railstar for the incident, but it does appear on the surface that if Railstar had had their act together and hadn't made so many screwups along the way they would have had something more to start out with than a bandaid.
This is not to say that the C&TS hasn't had its share of similar incidents over the years, but in today's climate I would suggest that this latest incident is more in the realm of the law of averages than human error and/or omission.
That being said, it is my sincere hope that the Loop manages to get their act together - quickly.
