Scott. I can't answer your question regarding the one unit, but I can say that the 1970 trip we have film of shot from the dome car was 4 units, with a steam heating car spiced in the middle after the second b-unit.
In 1981 when we chased the then Rio Grande Zephyr, it had an A unit and a pair of B units and no steam heating car.
