I clicked too soon. I said:
"There wasn't actually a direct, non-stop path from Denver to Salida - trains changed directions at Pueblo."
Which is technically true, but misleading, because southbound trains entered Pueblo on the AT&SF. Northbound trains did have a direct route without reversing directions, because they went north on the D&RGW.
So no. 1 would come in on the AT&SF, pull onto the MP, and back in the station before heading west. No. 2 would arrive, pull up to the station, and continue in the same direction when it departed.
